The Primer That Isn't a Primer

Our cooling gel cream was built for gua sha. People keep putting it under their foundation instead. Here's why it works.

Most primers have one job: hold your foundation in place. They either stay a little tacky or lay down a silicone film. Both work. Both also mean one more product whose only purpose is to support another product.

So here's a different idea: what if your skincare step already did that?

The 3-to-5-minute window

Our Hydro Booster Gel Cream has one texture rule: rich on touch, weightless after.

Right after you apply it, the gel feels cushioned and a little clingy for about three to five minutes. That's the "glide window" that makes it great with a gua sha or facial roller. Then it melts in naturally. No wiping, no residue.

That window is the whole trick. Foundation or concealer applied during it settles into hydrated, evenly prepped skin instead of sitting on top. Once the gel melts in, skin is soft but not slippery, which is exactly what base makeup holds onto best.

"We didn't design Hydro as a primer. We designed it as skincare that stands on its own and glides with a tool. It turns out the same three to five minutes that make it good for gua sha also make it a very good base for makeup. One step, two jobs, and the skincare job comes first."

Why cool skin takes makeup better

Hydro is the cooling one in our Booster Gel line. Its texture is called Cooling Cloud, and it's formulated with moisture-filled capsules that lowered skin temperature by 8.9°F (4.92°C) immediately after use in clinical testing.*

For your morning, that means two things:

  • Cooler, well-hydrated skin takes base makeup more evenly.
  • Waking up a little puffy? A cold gel plus a few upward gua sha strokes visibly helps with the look of it before makeup goes on.

5 ways to use it

  1. Before foundation. Thin layer on clean skin. Wait 3–5 minutes (brush your teeth, make coffee), then foundation or tinted moisturizer. Skip the primer.
  2. Morning de-puff. Use a little more, then glide a gua sha or roller from the center of your face outward and upward for 2–3 minutes.
  3. Under sunscreen. No-makeup day? Hydro first, give it 3–5 minutes to melt in, then SPF on top. It layers cleanly. (Try it with our 2% Panthenol Hydro Airy Sunscreen.)
  4. Overnight cooling mask. After a long day in the sun, smooth on a generous layer before bed and leave it on.
  5. Just as your moisturizer. It's a hyaluronic-acid gel cream first. No makeup, no tool? It's simply your moisturizer.

What reviewers noticed

Early Amazon reviewers brought up the same three things on their own: the cooling, how it layers under makeup, and the slip it gives a tool.

"It feels cooling and soothing right away… I like how lightweight it feels and how well it layers with my other skincare and makeup. It doesn't pill."

— Elle, Amazon reviewer

"It absorbs quick enough for me to apply my makeup after about 5 minutes and my face feels super hydrated."

— Ginger Snap, Amazon reviewer

"I love using it with my gua sha and facial roller because it gives me plenty of slip without disappearing immediately."
